Singer and Choir Tips & Techniques - May 19, 2008

CHOIRS and SINGERS

FIRST give Christ your music ministry. He will bless it to the extent you put winning souls first. God's desire is that none perish but come to repentance. John 3:16

Sing the song you aren't particularly fond of with a good attitude. It may be exactly what someone else needs to hear.

Choir members, hold your head up when there is a solo. It shows you are interested in the whole song - not just your part.

If you know you need extra help, bring a portable tape player. Record the rehearsal so you can practice at home.

To get a balanced sound, arrange choir so the lower voices are centered. When numbers permit, sections need to be in clusters (or several rows) versus one line. High notes tend to carry further so avoid putting them all up front.

Example of Choir Order:
Sop Sop Ten Ten Alto Alto
Sop Sop Ten Ten Alto Alto
Sop Sop BassBass Alto Alto

Try singing music from a different era or style. This may be challenging but it serves to reach a diverse audience. And sometimes an "oldie but goodie" is right on time.

Harping on someone else's inability will reduce the choir's overall effectiveness to minister. Edify or hush.

Dating another choir member can cause you both to be distracted. If your relationship doesn't work out, the choir ministry may suffer. If God is truly drawing you together, HOLINESS will abound. Really seek God's face in this matter.

No one will know you messed up if you don't let them know. Facial expressions and body language gives it away. Sometimes you mess up so badly that all you really need to do is have a good laugh or good cry and go on.

Choir Leaders: Praise openly. Rebuke in private.

QUIT smoking. Your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit.

Work to serve and please God - not to impress others. There is something to be said for simply yielding to God.

Be willing to give a sacrifice of praise.
God is bigger than anyone and any situation.

LOVE GOD more than music. If you can only "get in the Spirit" with certain types of music, then you're worshipping music.

Expect that willful sin will contradict the message and drain the power of music ministry.

Give regular attendance to a group Bible Study as well as having your own daily devotion with God.

BE REAL. Go to God with EVERYTHING in prayer. He can handle anything you tell Him. Confess your faults to a trustworthy believer so they can pray for you and you can be healed!

Have your vocal chords checked at your annual physical for nodes that can develop, making it difficult to sing.

Whenever possible, a lead singer should test the microphone before a program. If this is not possible, you can also hear what it sounds like when someone else is using it. Then you'll know how far away to hold it or whether to use it at all.

Soloists, when singing with a director, agree on who's following who. Let everything be done decently and in order.

God made you unique. You can grow in your gift without comparing yourself with others. Branch out in ways that honor Him.

Open your heart to be a channel for God to minister to others. To have that focus is especially helpful when you're asked to sing a song--again!

Practice in front of a mirror.

Network with other groups and have a concert to benefit a worthy cause.

Study Jesus' message to the 7 seven churches in Revelation. (Rev. 2, 3). Ask yourselves what the Spirit is saying to you personally and as a choir. Write it down and remind yourselves often.
